Much of the buzz at Oracle OpenWorld this year was around fast-track cloud implementations, with presentations from companies that attested to a 4-6 month implementation success. As cloud implementation veterans, this raised more than a few red flags, so we took advantage of the post-presentation Q&A time to dig deeper into the details of these “rapid implementation successes.”

How Long Does a Cloud Implementation Really Take?

Can Oracle Cloud be implemented in 4-6 months? The short answer is yes, but with a lot of caveats. This timeframe did not include the 3-5 months of environment assessment, requirements gathering, business process assessments and changes, planning, and preparation, nor did it factor in the 3-18 months (depending on the size of your implementation) rollout of complete functionality and access throughout the organization. This abbreviated implementation window may be possible with a small-scale pilot that is a simple implementation of your existing environment, but it would allow for no changes and little education on the shifts in processes you’ll face when moving to the cloud, which are significant.

Expectations for such short-term implementations can result in schedule and budget disasters, so it is important to understand what you are signing up for.
