Avout Corporation donates 1% of their top line to Bicycles for Humanity and Colorado Mountain Club.

Denver, CO – 1% for the Planet is a global movement comprised of companies that give 1% of sales to support worldwide non-profit organizations focused on sustainability, and Denver-based Avout Corporation is on board. Avout’s President and CEO Barry Wiebe selected the recipients of Avout’s donations based on two things close to his heart—biking and the Colorado outdoors. “We wanted to pick organizations that were doing meaningful work, and be able to make contributions that were sizable enough to make a difference,” said Wiebe.

Since 2011, Avout has been donating 1% of its sales to Colorado Mountain Club, a group that spreads its passion by advocating mountain enjoyment and study, and the Colorado chapter of Bicycles for Humanity, an organization that donates bicycles to empower people in developing countries with transportation. Over the past three years, Avout has grown rapidly, as have its donations. “Avout’s trajectory over the past few years has been nothing short of incredible,” said Kerry Newton, Membership Maven for 1% for the Planet.

“In 2012 Avout helped fund the pilot for Alpine Start, our program to teach leadership and outdoor skills to young adults. In 2013 they were the program’s largest funder. Avout is an incredibly important sponsor for us. Their donations have really made this program possible,” shared Kristin Vanderver, Events and Corporate Sponsorships Manager for Colorado Mountain Club.

Bicycles for Humanity ties in with another of Wiebe’s ventures, Avout Racing. Members of the Avout-sponsored cycling team volunteered to help with a recent bicycle shipment to Zambia, with 60 of the bikes coming from a campaign one racer organized at her high school. “Bikes enable improved access to healthcare, schooling, and employment opportunities, and are game-changers for the people in Africa,” said Joshua Pace, President of Bicycles for Humanity Colorado. “In 2013, Avout’s donations helped us fund a shipment to Mfangano Island in Kenya, a rural community of 16,000 which  can only be accessed by boat. Avout’s most recent contribution will fund three incremental shipments of 400 bikes to other African communities in need.”
